Safety by Design: How We Protect Our Student Journalists

Whenever young people are involved in something public, safety must come first. This has been a central part of the thinking behind the Independent Youth Press from the very beginning. The goal is to give learners a chance to learn and take part, but never at the cost of their well-being.

IYP was built with clear boundaries in place. These boundaries are not there to limit learners. They are there to protect them. The stories learners work on are carefully chosen. They are encouraged to focus on everyday topics that are close to school life and community life. This might include school activities, local events, or positive initiatives taking place around them. They are not asked to investigate dangerous situations or report on issues that could place them at risk.

This is sometimes described as proximity reporting. In simple terms, it means learners report on what is around them and what they can safely observe. They are not expected to go beyond their comfort zone or put themselves in difficult positions. Another important part of safety is privacy.

Because many of the learners are minors, there are strict rules about what can and cannot be shared. Personal details are handled with care. No one is identified without proper permission. If a story involves sensitive information, it is reviewed very carefully before any decision is made to publish it.
The process itself also helps protect learners.

Every story moves through three stages before it is made public. First, the learner works on the draft. Then the teacher reviews it. After that, the editor checks it again. This means there are always adults guiding the process and watching for anything that could cause harm or misunderstanding.

There is also a clear understanding that if a problem ever appears, the story can be removed quickly. Having this kind of response in place helps schools and parents feel more comfortable about their children taking part.

Safety is not treated as an extra step. It is part of how the whole project is designed. The aim is to create a space where learners can learn, grow, and take part in something meaningful, while still feeling supported and protected. When young people know they are safe, they are more likely to take part with confidence.

That is why safety sits at the centre of everything IYP does.
